Remus awoke to the sounds of light snoring and flapping wings. He opened one eye slowly and let his gaze focus on the familiar ceiling of the hospital wing. The other bleary eye opened and he turned and bent his aching neck to look at the arm draped gingerly across his chest, just missing the bandages here and there. He turned his head to see an utterly unfamiliar sight. Sirius was lying in the bed next to him, mouth hanging open, drooling onto the other pillow.

Blinking, Remus turned his head to the other side. James was sitting in a chair just to the right of the bed, playing with that damned snitch. That'd be the sound of wings, then. Remus could hear his neck creaking as he looked at the window near the head of his bed. Peter was sitting in it, blond head leaning against the glass, snoring lightly.

Remus started at the sound of Madam Pomfrey's voice, and Peter nearly toppled to the floor as he was jarred from sleep. "Mr. Lupin, good to see you awake. It's nearly lunchtime. I told your friends--"

"She tried to get us to go away," James cut in, giving Remus a smile.

Sirius yawned and sat up beside Remus, folding his legs. "But we told her nobody but God himself could make us go."

"She tried to get Dumbledore to make us go," Peter piped up, "but he told her he's not God, and as long as we weren't being loud, why couldn't we stay."

Madam Pomfrey scowled as she checked Remus' bandages, but Remus smiled a weary smile. Last night had been the first time he'd had company for the full moon. The transformation still hurt like hell, and today he still felt like he'd been run over repeatedly by the Knight Bus. But he also felt something else. He felt safe. He felt happier than he had since he'd been bitten. And he felt like he belonged.
