"Love you, Moony."

Peter always said things like that when Remus was on his way out of Gryffindor Tower. Remus had often wondered if Peter's parents weren't affectionate enough with him or something, to make him always go on like that. But a while ago, he realized that Peter didn't behave quite that way with anyone else. He'd been watching and thinking for weeks, and tonight, he felt, was the perfect time to see if he'd actually figured out what he thought he'd figured out.

Instead of giving Peter the usual dismissive nod, Remus paused halfway through the otherwise empty common room and fixed his amber gaze on his friend. "Do you? Really?" he asked.

Peter felt like ... well, a trapped rat. "Er... Yeah."

Looking down at the floor, Remus nodded a bit and then stood perfectly still until Peter thought that perhaps he should have lied. But then he was moving again. Closer, to Peter's surprise, rather than toward the portrait hole to continue down to the library to meet Lily.

Peter nearly flinched when Remus reached for him, but he managed not to, and the other boy's hand came to rest comfortably at the back of his neck. Lips met, pressed together softly, parted with a flicker of Remus' tongue.

And then it was over just as quickly as it began. Remus flashed a small smile and murmured, "Can't be late for studying with Lily." He took three steps toward the portrait hole and paused, turning to look at Peter again. Grinning shyly, he came back and rested his forehead against Peter's. "We'll talk later." With one more gentle kiss, he disappeared for the library.

Peter stared after him, blinking owlishly. Slowly, a grin spread across his face. Remus sure as hell was full of surprises sometimes.
