The other day I decided it was time to clean out the list of LJ communities I was a part of. There were a lot that I didn't really care for very much anymore and a lot that were inactive and the sheer number of them was making me hesitate to join new and interesting ones. So I cut the number just about in half and then joined a few more.
One of the new ones I joined was
house_cameron. (Shh. I am also in
cameron_wilson,
house_cuddy,
house_stacy,
house_wilson, and
wilson_cuddy, but
house_cameron is the one in question at the moment.)
This morning a post popped up wherein someone called House/Cameron fans to go
here and vote for the anti-House/Stacy option. Totally natural thing, of course. But this was the second such post that I've seen in the two days since I joined and some of the comments have been beyond idiotic. In particular, the one in the first post that said we needed to vote against House/Stacy because OMG WHAT IF THE WRITERS SEE THIS POLL AND IT AFFECTS THEIR PLOTS!? I wanted to scream.
Anyway, another concern that rose in both posts was the fact that with all the people out there who ship House with another character, or with nobody at all, surely there is no way that so many people would like to see House/Stacy happen. I stepped in (both times) and pointed out that "Just because you like House/Cameron or House/Wilson or House/Cuddy (or House/Chase or House/Foreman or House/cane to round it up and be all-inclusive) doesn't mean you can't like House/Stacy as well." In the second post, the person I was replying to said that they still thought it was weird, based on the level of Stacy-hate that they've seen in the fandom.
This was my reply:
I think that's mostly an online fandom thing. I don't know anybody who just watches the show and doesn't participate in online fandom who hates Stacy.
But, unfortunately, character hate runs rampant around here. I've been part of this community for two days and I've already seen tons of Stacy hate as well as an unnecessary eyeroll at the House/Wilson shippers. When you get a large group of people together who all like something, they start bashing each other's more specialized preferences, as well as each other in general.
People hate Cameron for being "too nice" or Cuddy for being "a bitch" or Stacy for "screwing House over" (because saving his life? was a really, really horrible thing for her to do, indeed). And don't even get me started about the people who complain about any one of the three of them being manipulative, because there is plenty of manipulation being done by the men on that show, too, and they don't get any hate for it.
Has anyone else noticed that? I certainly hope I'm not the only one seeing it. It's mostly the female characters that fandom hates. Wilson, despite cheating on his wives and fairly consistently lying to House, is still fandom's teddy bear. He's done significantly more sleazy and underhanded stuff than a lot of the other characters, and yet people wanna take him home and snuggle him. (Me, included. He's my favorite character, actually. But you can be damn sure I wouldn't expect much from him in the long run.)
Really, Stacy just needs to grow a penis. Then people would like her.
So. Discuss. I'd like to know what
all of you think. Everybody who wants to can take part. This certainly isn't something that happens only in the House fandom.
